Non-inverno e Visioni Americane (Some Kind of Winter and American Visions)

Iniziamo dando un caloroso ben tornato al nostro guest-blogger Electric Woden!

Assente da un po’, il Woden ritorna, abbastanza a suo agio, in questo inverno - non inverno.

Sopravissuto alle feste di fine anno, tra paganesimi farlocchi e smarrimenti di oggetti elettronici; sopravissuto soprattutto grazie a delle sane letture: Charles Bukowski e Aldous Huxley.
Due scrittori diametralmente opposti – ma entrambi umani, così umani.

Eccolo qua, il Chinaski, cinico e distaccato: “Spesso porto con me cose da leggere, così non devo guardare la gente” (“I often carry things to read, so that I will not have to look at the people”) -da Le Poesie Dell'ultima Notte Della Terra, versione italiana di Minimum Fax, 2004.

Oppure, sempre il Bukowski: “La mia ambizione è limitata dalla mia pigrizia” (“My ambition is handicapped by laziness”) -da Factotum, SugarCo, 1975.

E, con la stessa intensità, lirico e romantico: “Ti amai come un uomo ama una donna, e non la tocca mai, soltanto le scrive, e tiene piccole fotografie di tutto questo” (“I loved you like a man loves a woman he never touches, only writes to, keeps little photographs of it”) -da L'amore E' Un Cane Che Viene Dall'inferno, SugarCo, 1978.

Ed anche “l’anima libera è rara, ma te ne accorgi quando la vedi – fondamentalmente perchè stai bene, molto bene quanto ti è vicina” (“the free soul is rare, but you know it when you see it - basically because you feel good, very good, when you are near or with them”) -da Storie Di Ordinaria Follia, Feltrinelli, 1975.

In questi larvati pomeriggi di gennaio, il Vostro riscopre un disco di pochi mesi fa: Barragán dei Blonde Redhead. Questo album che e' il loro primo in quattro anni, continua una serie fortunata di pubblicazioni e contiene la traccia “The One I Love”:

Una chitarra acustica minimale, e la voce di Kazu Makino che si appoggia, pigra, a una melodia sfilacciata, e sembra quasi che stia cantando in una piccola stanza, in un appartamento – guardinga e sommessa, come se non volesse farsi sentire dai vicini di casa. Gli stessi suoni elettronici, d’ambiente, danno la stessa idea. Il video stesso porta quest’idea, anche se girato quasi tutto in esterni.

L’Elettrico, questa volta così vintage e postmoderno, si congeda suggerendo di cogliere l’essenziale, quando non ci si rende conto dei particolari: un po’ come la tremenda Lara Antipov, ne Il dottor Zivago:



 Saranno i tempi sbandati.

Charles Bukowski

Absent for a while, The Woden is now back, quite at ease, in this unusual winter for Italy.

I've survived the festive season, between phony paganism and loss of electronic devices; I've survived mainly thanks to some healthy readings: Charles Bukowski and Aldous Huxley. Two writers who are diametrically opposed - but both human, oh so human.

Here he is, Chinaski, cynical and detached as always: “I often carry things to read so that I will not have to look at the people.” -from The Last Night of The Earth Poems, Black Sparrow Press , 1992.

Or, Bukowski again: "My ambition is handicapped by laziness." -from Factotum,  Black Sparrow Press, 1975.

And, with the same lyrical and romantic intensity: "I loved you like a man loves a woman he never touches, only writes to, keeps little photographs of it." -from Love is a Dog from Hell, Black Sparrow Press, 1977.

And also, "The free soul is rare, but you know it a when you see it - basically Because You feel good, very good, a when you are near or with them." -from Tales of Ordinary Madness, City Lights Books, 1972.

In these veiled January afternoons, Yours Truly rediscovers an album that came out just a few months ago, Barragán by Blonde Redhead. This album, which is their first in four years but continues a long succession of great releases, contains the track "The One I Love":




There is a minimal acoustic guitar while Kazu Makino's voice is leaning, lazily, on a frayed melody, and it seems like she's singing in a small room, inside an apartment - cautious and subdued, as if not wanting to be heard by her neighbors. The ambient electronic sounds in this song, express the same idea and so does the video itself, although it was almost completely shot outdoors.

The Electric, this time so vintage and postmodern, takes leave suggesting to grasp the essential, when you cannot catch all the details, a bit like the tremendous Lara Antipov, in Doctor Zhivago:



It must be because of these hard times.
