La prima intervista che vi proponiamo e' una chiacchierata virtuale con una vecchia conoscenza della scena musicale pop udinese, Mr. Capitan Love... Pop ma d'autore s'intende, basti leggere i nomi che Raniero cita alla fine. Senza avvisare, in perfetta solitudine ma con un drappello di fortunati fedelissimi come spettatori, Capitan Love si e' esibito in pieno stile Beatles sul tetto della nostra emittente, in Via Volturno a Udine poche settimane fa. Up Key Notes: Innanzitutto raccontaci qualcosa di questi anni "perduti", Capitan Love... Anni formativi, immagino...

Capitan Love: A volte mi sembra di essermi svegliato da un lungo sonno e mi chiedo "perché ho dormito?" Come tutti in verità ho imparato anche dai miei errori. Per quanto riguarda la musica potrei dire che molti anni li ho buttati via per mie vecchie insicurezze, il resto per incontri sfortunati.

Up Key Notes: Sei all'esordio da "solista", dopo l'esperienza di un po' di anni fa' con gli Erotics, band di Udine e dintorni... Cosa ti è rimasto di quella esperienza?

Capitan Love: Che stare in un gruppo e' come avere una storia d'amore: se non va non va. Deve essere un'esperienza totalizzante in caso contrario si va verso la fine. Ho formato gli Erotics perché volevo una cellula di terroristi del pop. Tante cose sono andate bene ma come le sedotte e abbandonate ora guardo fuori dalla finestra e giuro che non mi innamorerò più, solo autoerotismo. Sono rimaste anche delle belle song, alcune sono in "The Wasted" suonate insieme agli ex Erotics..

Up Key Notes: Come sono nate le canzoni di "The wasted years of Capitan Love"? Hai scritto tutto da solo e l'unico input è stato quello di Marzipan Marzipan?

Capitan Love: Sono nate negli anni senza nessun fine di entrare in un disco che avesse qualche concetto di base. Io guardo alle canzoni come mondi a se stanti e compongo solo se ispirato, come quasi tutti del resto. Non ho cercato un filo conduttore nel disco. Sicuramente ogni canzone ha una sua identità sonora ma a posteriori ho scoperto che ci sono delle continuità ad un livello più sottile: un modo contrastato di vedere il mondo tra ironia e malinconia. Pero' malinconia non mi piace come termine; sentite il disco per trovare il termine giusto! Le canzoni le  ho scritte io ma, oltre all'immensa Marzipan Marzipan, ho avuto significativi aiuti da persone a me molto vicine tra cui gli ex Erotics, Gigi Patruno e Nicola Pravisano.

 Up Key Notes: Stai suonando diverse date in zona, come trovi l'accoglienza del pubblico?

Capitan Love: Molto buona. Il live e' diverso dal disco. E' essenziale, punk, romantico e deviato. Non solo grazie a strumenti straordinari come la loop station ma per un atteggiamento diverso.

In questo momento lo preferisco al disco e non solo perché ci sono tante canzoni nuove. Il disco e' un sogno pop mentre il live e' molto " qui e ora." Sono cambiato rispetto al disco e temo che chi non lo gradisce e decide quindi di non vedere i miei live si perda qualcosa che invece potrebbe piacergli. Spero di postare al più presto dei buoni video dei miei concerti.

Up Key Notes: I testi del tuo lavoro non scadono mai nel banale o nel già letto/sentito, trappola in cui molti artisti italiani cadono, soprattutto se vogliono scrivere in inglese... Sono gonfi di ironia ma celano anche delle frasi piuttosto pesanti, talvolta pessimiste... 100% autobiografico o c'è dell'altro?

Capitan Love: Grazie, non tutti leggono i testi delle canzoni cosiddette pop! La maggior parte e' autobiografico e quello che non lo e' in modo palese ha sempre una chiave di lettura in cui mi riconosco.

Mi piace tendere delle trappole come scrivere cose "pesanti e pessimiste" all' interno di canzoni che a prima vista sembrano solo allegre o al massimo ironiche. Cerco il contrasto ma voglio che sia sottile. Che agisca inconsciamente. Che poi ci riesca e' un'altra questione...

Up Key Notes: I brani mostrano musicalmente due anime, una più bucolica ed acustica, un'altra elettronica, magari con suoni di tastiera un pò datati... Con quale ti senti più a tuo agio e quale vorresti sviluppare di più in futuro? Non senti mai la mancanza di una band vera e proprio, a supporto dei tuoi pezzi? 

Capitan Love: Io penso che l'elemento in cui mi sento più a mio agio è un altro e cioè quello compositivo. Fra acustico ed elettronica sicuramente mi spaventa di più la seconda che devo studiare quasi da zero. Anche in questo caso ti rispondo con "contrasto": meglio un misto delle due cose, no? Dal vivo forse c'è qualcosa del genere in modo più evidente. E comunque comanda sempre la canzone per me. Mai un sound di base. Se la canzone chiede solo una chitarra io mi inchino al volere della mia bambina. Il mio sound e' l'attitudine che penso sia personale anche se certamente debitrice dei grandissimi. Beatles, Bowie, Barrett, Tom Waits, etc. A volte sento la mancanza di una band, di un Charlie Watts, ma, come ho risposto prima, il mio cuore e' spezzato... ad ogni modo spero sempre in un cavaliere straniero che venga a bussare alla mia porta.

Up Key Notes: First of all, tell me something about these “Wasted Years”, Capitan Love. Formative years, I suppose…
 
Capitan Love: Sometimes it feels like I woke up from a long sleep and I wonder “why did I sleep”? Like everyone in truth I think I learnt from my mistakes. As regards to my music I can definitely say that I wasted so many years because of my insecurities, others because of unfortunate encounters.

Up Key Notes: You just released your first solo work, after spending years with your former band, the Erotics, a band from the city of Udine (North-East of Italy, in the region of Friuli). What’s left with you from that experience?

Capitan Love: I think that being in a band is like being in a (love) relationship. There’s nothing you can do if it doesn’t work. It has to be a totalizing experience, otherwise you’ll head towards the end pretty soon. I founded the Erotics because I wanted to be in “a pop terrorists cell”. Many things went fine but just like some seduced and abandoned woman I’m looking out the window right now and I swear I’ll never fall in love again, just self-sex. A few good songs are also left, some of them are on “The Wasted”, played with former Erotics members.

Up Key Notes: How did the songs on “TWYOCL” come into shape? Did you write everything by yourself, with the only other contribution coming from Marzipan Marzipan?

Capitan Love: They started without any idea of any record concept. I conceive songs like worlds on their own, I compose only if I’m inspired, like everyone else after all. I wasn’t looking for a concept on this record. Each one of these songs has its own sonic identity but in retrospect I found out that there are continuities at a subtler level: a conflicting way of seeing the world between irony and melancholy, although I don’t like this last term: people should listen to the record and find the right term! Anyway I wrote all the songs but besides the immense Marzipan Marzipan I received some significant assistance from the other ex-Erotics members: Gigi Patruno and Nicola Pravisano.  
 
Up Key Notes: You’re playing a lot of shows around the area, how do you find the public reception at your gigs?

Capitan Love: Very good. The live experience is different from the record, it’s more essential, punk, romantic and deviated. Not only thanks to important instruments like the loop station, also because of a different attitude. At this moment I prefer this thing to the record and not only because there are so many new songs. The record is a “pop dream” while the gigs are really “here and now”. I have changed since the record and I’m afraid that those who don’t like it and prefer not to come and see my shows might miss something they’d eventually like. I hope I can post some good videos from my concerts.

Up Key Notes: Your lyrics are never predictable or dull, which is a trap a lot of Italian artists who write in English fall into. They’re full of irony but sometimes hide some heavy and pessimistic phrases… 100% autobiography or is there something else?

Capitan Love: Thanks! Not a lot of people read the lyrics of “so-called” pop songs. Most of them are autobiographical but those who are not clearly like that present an interpretation in which I recognize myself. I like to be alluring, writing “heavy and pessimistic” things that apparently sound happy or at the most just ironic. I’m looking for contraposition but I want it to be subtle. I want it to act unconsciously. If I succeed in doing so or not is another matter.

Up Key Notes: The tracks show two souls, one is more pastoral and acoustic, the other is electronic with some outmoded keyboard sounds… Which of the two you find more at ease with and which would you like to develop more in the future? Do you ever miss a real band that can support your songs?

Capitan Love: I think the element I find more at ease with is another one: composing. Between the acoustic and electronic way I definitely fear the second one the most, since I’m starting almost from scratch. So I answer again with “contraposition”, it’s better to have a combination of both, isn’t it? I think this is more evident when I play live, though. And anyway, the song is always my master, never a basic sound. If my song wants me to play just a guitar, I kneel at my baby’s will. My sound is an attitude I believe personal , although I’m in debt with some of the greatest: Beatles, Bowie, Barrett, Tom Waits, etc. I sometimes miss being part of a band, of some Charlie Watts figure, but like I said before, my heart is broken. Anyway I’m always dreaming of a knight in shiny armor from another country to come and knock on my door.
